USS Makin Island: F-35B ‘Lightning Carrier’ Bound for the Middle East

USS Makin Island sails for the Middle East with the 13th MEU — with F-35Bs aboard it becomes a 'lightning carrier.' What the ship is, and where it is now.

The USS Makin Island amphibious ship is heading from San Diego toward the Middle East with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, but the flat deck can make the ship easy to misread. USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is already stationed in the Middle East as tensions with Iran rise. The last Nimitz-class carrier's specs, history and mission.

The USS George H.W. Bush carrier is already in the Middle East, making it the ship that must hold the current posture while reinforcements cross from San Diego. USS Theodore Roosevelt and its escorts are expected later in October or November; USS Makin Island is bringing a Marine expeditionary unit. Until they arrive, CVN-77 remains one of the two American carrier flight decks in the theater.

USS George Washington: The Japan-Based Carrier Now in the Middle East

USS George Washington (CVN-73) left its Japan homeport to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln. Why the forward-deployed carrier is now in the Middle East.

The USS George Washington carrier Middle East mission begins with an unusual fact: the ship normally belongs in Japan. CVN-73 is the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, based at Yokosuka to respond quickly in the Western Pacific. Sending it west to relieve USS Abraham Lincoln in August 2026 showed how urgently the Navy needed another flight deck in the Iran theater.
