The Cowboys Eagles final score on Monday night was Dallas 38, Philadelphia 21 — and for once this season, the Cowboys looked like the team their record was supposed to describe. Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, Javonte Williams rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, and Dallas piled up more than 400 yards of offense at Lincoln Financial Field to close Week 7, snapping a two-game losing streak and sending the Eagles to a fifth straight defeat. Both teams had arrived at 2-4, talking about a reset. Only one of them found it.

The game was a genuine contest for two and a half quarters. Philadelphia, starting backup quarterback Tanner McKee with Jalen Hurts out indefinitely, traded scores with Dallas through a first half that ended 20-14, then briefly took the lead midway through the third quarter when McKee found rookie Makai Lemon for a 4-yard touchdown — Lemon's first in the NFL — at the end of a 17-play, 84-yard drive that consumed more than nine minutes. Dallas answered in just over four minutes: Prescott hit CeeDee Lamb for a 16-yard touchdown and ran in the two-point conversion himself for 28-21. A Brandon Aubrey field goal stretched it to 31-21, DeMarvion Overshown intercepted McKee to kill Philadelphia's response, and Williams closed the door with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:27 left.

How Dallas won it: a clean pocket and a running game

The most telling statistic of the night belongs to Philadelphia's defense, and it is a row of zeroes: no sacks, no tackles for loss, no quarterback hits, as reported by theScore. Prescott, who had spent Dallas's recent primetime losses under siege, played the whole evening in a clean pocket — and a clean-pocket Prescott is a different quarterback. He opened the scoring drive sheet with a 55-yard Aubrey field goal on the game's first possession, then found Lamb from 9 yards, George Pickens from 21 yards on a fingertip catch at the edge of the end zone, and Lamb again from 16 yards in the third quarter. Williams gave the offense its balance: his 155 yards were built in steady chunks behind an offensive line that, for one night, won its matchup outright.

Philadelphia's night: Barkley's return that never quite arrived

Saquon Barkley's return was the Eagles' best news and, in the end, another worry. Back after missing two games and most of a third with a hamstring injury, Barkley announced himself immediately — a 12-yard reception on the first play, a 29-yard run on his first carry, and an 8-yard touchdown to finish the opening drive. But he pulled up on that first carry, spent stretches on an exercise bike and on the bench with trainers working on his upper leg, and played in short bursts all night: 71 total yards on 11 touches. The Eagles listed a back injury in the fourth quarter and his return as questionable; he did not finish the game. When backup Dameon Pierce — who scored Philadelphia's second touchdown from 5 yards — was also hurt in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were down to practice-squad elevation Elijah Mitchell at running back.

McKee, in his second start, was efficient early and brave on the long third-quarter drive, but Philadelphia's offense asked him to win a shootout his defense could not slow down. The Eagles scored on each of their first two drives and still trailed, because Dallas scored on its first three. In a division game between two 2-4 teams, that arithmetic is the story: one defense got a stop when it mattered — Overshown's interception, in his return from injury, with 7:47 left and Dallas up ten — and the other never got one at all.

Why this matters

Start with the standings, because in the NFC East they suddenly matter again. Dallas moves to 3-4 with three of its next four against struggling opponents, a schedule that turns Monday's win from a relief into a possible launch point. Philadelphia falls to 2-5, on a five-game losing streak, with its franchise quarterback out indefinitely, its star running back managing two injuries at once, and a defense that just played a full game without touching the opposing quarterback. Those are not the problems of a slumping contender; they are the problems of a team whose season is coming apart in layers.

The numbers underneath the score

Compare the two rushing lines and the game explains itself. Dallas ran for a Williams-led total that controlled the second half and the clock; Philadelphia, built to lean on Barkley, got 11 managed touches from him and a committee thereafter. Compare the pressure lines and it sharpens: a defense recording zero sacks, zero tackles for loss and zero quarterback hits in 60 minutes has not had a bad night — it has had no night at all. And compare the quarterbacks' situations: Prescott threw three touchdowns from a clean pocket for a healthy offense, while McKee threw to stay alive behind a shrinking supporting cast. The 38-21 score flatters neither team inaccurately. It is exactly what the underlying numbers describe.

Context: two seasons that met in the middle

Neither team arrived here by accident. Dallas had lost in primetime to Tampa Bay's undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels and then disappeared offensively against Green Bay — the Packers beat Cowboys game covered in our Sunday night report — and owner Jerry Jones told ESPN before kickoff, in colorful terms, what the last backup-quarterback matchup had done to his team. Philadelphia's slide is longer and stranger: the Panthers beat Eagles result earlier this month started the visible unraveling, Hurts's blood-clots absence (covered in our Jalen Hurts NFLPA investigation report) removed the offense's center, and Barkley's hamstring turned its best player into a part-time one. Monday night did not create either team's problems. It ranked them.

What happens next

For Dallas, the question is whether a clean-pocket, balanced offense travels: the next month will tell whether Monday was a matchup gift from a depleted defense or the start of the offense Prescott, Lamb, Pickens and Williams were assembled to be. For Philadelphia, everything waits on medical news — Hurts's timeline, Barkley's back and hamstring, Pierce's status — because a 2-5 team can survive a losing streak, but it cannot survive losing its backfield as well as its quarterback. The NFC East remains, as it has been all month, wide open. After Monday night, it is open in only one direction for the Eagles, and for the first time in three weeks, it is open in the right direction for Dallas.
