The Milwaukee Brewers are one win from the first World Series championship in franchise history, and the Tampa Bay Rays are one loss from the end of their season. Game 4 of the World Series is set for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, with first pitch at 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m. Pacific) on FOX. Milwaukee leads the series 3–0 after Monday's 10–1 rout in Game 3, and Tampa Bay turns to right-hander Griffin Jax to keep the season alive against a Brewers club that had not named a starter by Tuesday afternoon and is expected to run a bullpen game.

How the series got here

Milwaukee's lead is commanding but the route was not all blowouts. The Brewers took Game 1 with a first-inning statement, then survived Game 2's 4–0 first-inning deficit to win 5–4 — the comeback Signal Post News chronicled in its Game 2 report. Game 3, by contrast, was a demolition: Robert Gasser threw six scoreless innings of one-hit ball, Jackson Chourio went 4-for-5, and an eight-run fifth inning — every run scoring with two outs — buried Tampa Bay 10–1, as set out in the Game 3 report. The series numbers tell the story of a lineup gone cold at the worst time: the Rays have scored seven runs in three games, while William Contreras is 7-for-13 with an RBI in every game and Chourio is 8-for-14.

The pitching matchup

Tampa Bay's choice is Griffin Jax, a converted reliever whose season line (8–10, 3.53 ERA) understates how good his stuff has been in short bursts — and how thin the margin is. Jax has a 6.00 ERA in two appearances this postseason, and the Rays' bullpen behind him is running on fumes: starter Freddy Peralta lasted only 4.2 innings in Game 3, forcing Tampa Bay deep into its relief corps in a game that was already lost. Milwaukee, meanwhile, can afford its unannounced starter. A bullpen game built around right-hander Dustin May (7–9, 4.70 ERA) or left-hander Shane Drohan (7–5, 4.19) plays to the Brewers' deepest strength — their relievers have allowed two runs in 13 innings in this series, and the Game 3 blowout meant manager Pat Murphy never had to touch his best arms on Monday.

Why this matters

History is the Rays' real opponent. No team has ever come back from 3–0 down to win the World Series; the only 3–0 comeback in postseason history belongs to the 2004 Boston Red Sox in the ALCS. Tampa Bay does not need to win the series tonight — it needs to win one game, at home, where it was the American League's best home team this season, and then make Milwaukee think about a flight back and a Game 5. For the Brewers, the stakes run the other way. Milwaukee has waited since 1982 — when the Harvey's Wallbangers club lost Game 7 in St. Louis — for a second shot at a title, and this roster, built on pitching depth and the youngest star in the series in Chourio, can close the argument in nine innings. Oddsmakers have the Brewers as modest favourites (around −135) despite the road park and the unannounced starter, which is another way of saying the market trusts Milwaukee's bullpen more than Tampa Bay's bats.

What to watch

Three things will settle Game 4. First, the first two innings: the Rays have been outscored early in every game, and an early deficit in an elimination game turns a crowd quiet and a dugout tight. Second, Jax's leash — Tampa Bay cannot let a bullpen game of its own making become a war of attrition it is not staffed to win, so expect a quick hook and aggressive matchups from the middle innings. Third, Contreras and Chourio in the same trips through the order: Milwaukee's two hottest bats bat in the heart of the lineup, and every clean inning Tampa Bay gets through them buys the Rays' offence — seven runs in three games — another chance to wake up. If the Brewers win, the confetti falls in Florida and the longest title drought in the National League's Central ends. If the Rays win, Game 5 is Wednesday night, and for the first time in this series, Milwaukee has something to lose.
